C'mon January 2nd

by Brenda Roger

I was relieved of blogging duty on Christmas day by my fellow bloggers. This was a good thing for all. I don’t like Christmas. Blogging today, the first day of a new year, is more my speed. A new beginning is something I can really get behind.

New Year’s day is a great day to throw things away. You can get rid of papers you were holding on to for one reason or another. You can throw away all of the catalogs you thought you might need for Christmas shopping. It is even a good day to throw away socks and underwear and just start over in those two drawers. Something about starting 2007 in new underpants is appealing right?? I’ll see you in the gutchie department later today.

2006 was not too bad for the Roger pack. There was some sadness, yes, but also many accomplishments to build on in 2007. This is an improvement over some years, when I look forward to the year changing just hoping it will signal some kind of cosmic switch that gets the universe to stop messing with us.

Then there are the resolutions. It seems like a good time to change bad habits and adopt new and better ones. I love the idea of resolutions. They are just so darn hard to keep past January 3rd. Every year I say I’m going to be more organized. Sigh.

Some people make a resolution to stop making resolutions. I know from experience that is tricky territory. I’m still trying to make a comeback from giving up lent for lent.

Does anyone out there care to share resolutions or new beginnings? I’ll be in the office throwing away papers all day, so I’d love to hear from you. Although, I do need to go out for a bit to buy some new undies…….

I'm not making any resolutions, but I am setting some goals. Since I'll be turning the big 50 this year, I want it to be more memorable than just getting old.

My big goal is to have a publishing contract this year. A big one would be nice, but I'll settle for anything that's more than a dollar.

Another goal is to get to some conferences. I already plan on going to Pennwriters, but I'll try for at least one more.

Joyce, Those are excellent goals. You have our support!

Joyce, you and I are riding the same train, as it were, into '07 (tho 50 is ancient history here; it's the big 6-0 for me). I typed the last period on my first draft for Cat Fight last week--yes, critique group members, you'll be getting my last two chapters soon--and now I'm into the rewrite and finding that I really like this phase of the creation process. Anyway, no resolutions here either, just goals--first and foremost, cleaning up Cat Fight, then peddling it around for an agent and, this is more wish than goal, landing a contract.

Sorry, Brenda, I can't join you in the gutchie dept.--forced to buy new underwear and socks in December. Maybe I should be shopping for new sweaters, something light for this spring-like winter weather.

I've resolved to clear out some of the stuff in my house. Does anybody want old furniture? Clothing? How about books? How about a lot of books?

Well, first and foremost, I need to unpack the new underwear I bought a month ago. But that means cleaning out the underwear drawer, which means figuring out which underpants slide down and which don't. Which isn't as easy as it sounds. Maybe I need to be bold here and just THROW AWAY.

On a more serious note, I'm signing up for a modern dance class. Let's hope I'm not forced to admit that my last forey into modern dance was 40 years ago!

I vow in 2007 to actually spend time writing something that might get published. I feel like I've wasted all last year chasing a dream my agent promoted and then failed to follow through on . Grrrr. Forgive and move on.

Brenda, you'll be proud of me. I went to Kohl's today and guess what I bought?

Mike, a big hooray! Can't wait to read your chapters!

Happy New Year, everyone!

My goals for 2007 are to take the camper out more than twice this year and to get through a vacation without Ray and/or I being sick or injured.

Writing goals are a little more up in the air at the moment although I do want to finish the first draft of my current novel...even though the first one hasn't sold yet...and to get it finished before the end of February. (I would say January, but I'm being realistic) Then I can decide what to do about the next one...

I'm so thrilled about everyone's underwear! Bravo Joyce! Mike and Tory, yours count as new year underwear, you are both just more effecient than the rest of us. Yes, Tory, throw away those quitters (undies and socks that don't stay up). I hope to see some of the writing goals happen. I have a few myself. Let us think of our new undies as a good foundation for good work!

Yes, who can think about writing when their underwear are sliding down?
