A Capitol Time

by Joyce

A couple of weeks ago, hubby and I went to visit our firstborn who lives in Virginia. He works at the US Capitol, and on Saturday afternoon he gave us a personal tour of the building. I took lots of pictures, so I thought I'd give everyone a little mini-tour.

The first photo shows the view of the Capitol as we approached from the Capitol South Metro station.

Next, is the view from the other side of the building.

This is the inside of the new Visitor's Center, which opened in December 2008.

Inside the Rotunda.

Old Supreme Court Chamber. This was used by the Supreme Court from 1810 until 1860.

The Brumidi Corridors on the first floor of the Senate Wing.

The view from the top of the Old Post Office.

The riverfront in Alexandria.

If you've never been to our nation's capital, I highly recommend it. It's extremely easy to get around the city (I love the Metro!), the people are friendly, the buildings are really cool, and for history geeks like me, there's plenty to do. Make those reservations now!

The Capitol is looking good. Were you anywhere near the Holocaust Museum during yesterday's shooting?
I haven't been to DC for several years. I used to go all the time for various demonstrations, which always allowed time for site-seeing and walking around. It's been 3 or 4 years at least. My ex- and I used to go down for the 4th of July, too, to demonstrate and see the fireworks.

We've made plans to go a couple of times and family health issues forced us to cancel. But it's high on my list of places I want to see. Thanks for the photo tour, Joyce

I love going to DC for a couple of reasons: the great art museums and to walk the mall and look at the monuments with a visit to the Smithsonian, too. Makes a great weekend! Thanks for the memories.

Gina, we were there a couple of weeks ago, so we missed it. The Holocaust Museum is at the other end of the city, near the Washington Monument. It's well worth seeing, though.

Make sure to tour the Capitol when you go, Annette. One of the things I like about DC is that most museums, etc, are free. I love free.

Except for a long time ago I've been to DC only on business. I get my early morning walks in and the evening ones, but everything is closed, so I'm always on the outside looking in.

Someday I'll get there and spend a couple of days at the Smithsonian.

Or better yet, see the original copywrited manuscript for A Reason For Dying in the Library of Congress.

Wow, Joyce, great photos. I've been to the Capitol, but it must have been 45 years ago, when I was a kid. My youngest daughter and I were in DC about 10 years ago, but we didn't spend nearly enough time there. She wanted to go to the museums, especially the Air & Space Museum, so that's what we did.

PS I'm the one who translated "killbossy" the other day. ;-)

Nice pictures, Joyce. It's been quite a few years since I've been to DC, but I do enjoy it when I go. Hmm, maybe we'll have to plan a road trip.
