What I'm Thankful For

by Laurissa

This month’s suggested theme is things for which we are thankful. This past year there have been a multitude of things that I’ve been grateful for.  But instead of listing the more serious things that I’m thankful for I’m going to share with you a not so serious thing.

Like everyone else I’ve had to tighten my financial belt a couple of notches over the past year. Towards that end, I’ve stopped buying the weekly entertainment magazines that are prominently displayed at the grocery store check-outs just pleading to be bought (shhh…please don’t let anyone else know that I used to buy them). To be honest, I didn’t know if I could do it, but somehow I’ve managed to soldier through the withdrawals with the help of a wonderful new substitute that hasn’t cost me any more than what I already pay for my basic cable, and that’s watching whatever Real Housewives series is currently airing on TV. So there you have it, I admit, I’m grateful for the Housewives! They amuse me.

And last but not least, I’m ever so thankful for, drum roll please… chocolate. Chocolate is the perfect food for all occasions, and I’m extra grateful when I have the chance to watch the Housewives while eating a bowl of chocolate ice cream!

Do you have any guilty pleasures that you’re thankful for this year?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Guilty pleasures. You mean the kind we can list on a family-friendly blog? I haven't gotten into Housewives. In fact, I kind of resent it because Bravo never runs my favorite show (Inside the Actor's Studio) anymore, just a solid stream of Real Housewives from Here, There, and Everywhere. My current weakness is Bollywood movies. I've even started buying them on dvd. Luckily, the prices have ranged from $4.80 to $5.20, well within my entertainment budget.

Chocolate, of course, that's a given, but this year I've been getting into Pepperidge Farms Pretzel Thins, which are exactly what they sound like - slivers of pretzel! Crunchy, tasty and sturdy enough for dipping, filling enough that a box lasts awhile. Who could ask for anything more in a snack?

Guilty pleasures, huh? Agree totally on the chocolate. Ice cream, too. At the moment I'm deep into obessively watching a certain old TV show on my computer, and that certainly counts, since I give a guilty start every time my husband comes into the office. On the other hand, I've gotten over watching three or four episodes of Criminal Minds on ION Television every night, so I guess I'm just exchanging one for the other, really. But I haven't ever gotten into reality TV, so at least I don't have that on my conscience.

Guilty pleasures. Hmm. Let me think.

Chocolate, like everyone else. I'd say ice cream too, but I can't buy it. If I do, I'll eat the whole container. Not good.

I don't watch much TV, and definitely no reality TV.

My biggest guilty pleasure is actually writing. I keep thinking I should be cleaning the house or something.

Gina, Jennie, and Joyce, it sounds like chocolate is the big winner in the guilty pleasure department for everyone. :-)

I love that writing could be considered a guilty pleasure. FOr me, it's reading. I never seem to have enough time for that -- and really, really good chocolate AND good red wine AND ... wait a minute, I'm not feeling guilty about any of it!

Good thought, Pat! Let's save the guilt for things that really matter - murder, mayhem, theft, cheating on our taxes, etc. - and give ourselves a pass on life's little pleasures.

Gina, I like those PF Pretzel Thins, too, but after reading Laurie's confession, I'm wondering how they'd taste dipped in chocolate. Hmm.

I think Thanksgiving Day is one big guilty pleasure festival. You watch parades, you drink Mimosas, you eat a huge meal, then you have pie. Since it only happens once a year, there's no reason to feel guilty about it, is there?

Pat, Gina, and Ramona, You're right! I guess that we shouldn't have to feel guilty about our little harmless pleasures in life. :-)

Housewives & chocolate... Sounds like a chick thing.

Tranlated to male-ese... Football and beer.

How about beer and chocolates? Dark chocolate goes REALLY well with a Guinness.

Joyce -
I love Guinness! When we were young and broke, my ex-husband and I used to get free drinks by ordering Guinness in bars. A lot of people are intrigued by its unusual appearance and the tricks you can do with it, like standing a pen or pencil in the center of the glass to show that the head is thick enough to keep it upright. They would order bottles for themselves, take one taste, then say, "Would you like the rest of this?" Worked every time!

I don't understand how someone could NOT like Guinness! Those who are afraid of it, think it's heavy and bitter, and it's not at all. It's very smooth, and kind of chocolatey. And it has fewer calories than most lagers.

My guilty pleasures, rarely taken in together, are french fries and Gossip Girl.
I love the salty crunch.
I love the clothes.

But the pleasure that delights me without fail every single night is snuggling under my down comforter.

***WARNING - SCIENCE CONTENT***

And, the reason Guiness floats on top of Harps in a Black & Tan is that the alcohol content of Guiness is higher pushing down the specific gravity (weight compared to water.) Alcohol is lighter than water.

Thanks, Will. That's another cool Guinness trick.

Pretzels dipped in chocolate sound really good. Will, I like your analogy. Rochelle, I also like watching The Gossip Girls although I've gotten away from it a bit this season. You also reminded me of my other guilty pleasure, french fried dipped in mayo.

One of my few talents is being able to pour a Black and Tan. It takes lots of practice to get it just right.
