Superpower?

by C.L. Phillips

Like a good jazz musician, I'm going to riff on Martha Reed's post from yesterday.  Martha asked, "Where do you get your good ideas?"

True confession. I get my good ideas by asking people crazy questions, sometimes at parties or one on one, preferably after a glass of wine.  Or two.

Want to play?

"If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

How would you use it?

Why do you want it?"

Okay, that's technically three questions, but I hope you'll play along.  I'll post my answer in the comments.

  1. I'm not sure if this counts as a superpower or not. I'd like to never need to sleep. Think of how much I'd get done!

  2. Invisibility. Just think of how much *I'd* get done if nobody could find me!

  3. Me, I'd go for teleportation. The ability to teleport to anywhere in the world, and to take three other people with me by having us all hold hands.

No airports, no time delays, just poof, and you are there!

Wouldn't that be cool. "I think I'll have lunch oceanside in Lahaina today." Tomorrow, I'll do my workout by skiing down Mozart at Keystone.

    Yep, teleportation.

  4. Okay. Now I want all three superpowers. Now.

  5. I used to want to be able to read minds. Then I started thinking about all the stupid things people say out loud, which made me wonder about all the stupid things they think and keep to themselves. Do I really want to know that?

I choose the ability to fly.

  6. I like teleportation too. Not because I dislike airports, and not just to travel the world, but to not have to ever drive a car again would be a major benefit. Not to have to get out on the road with all those scary people not paying attention. T G OR passed a law that it is unlawful for anyone to be on a cell phone for any reason other than calling 911.

  7. I like either the flying or the teleportation. Anything that would enable me to get around without fighting traffic. Although, Jenna's reasoning for invisibility appeals to me, too...

  8. Can I combine teleportation with invisibility, so I can go places and hang out without having to explain my presence to anyone?

  9. Gina,

    Invisibility plus teleportation? Awesome combo!

Okay folks, give yourself one more superpower...what would it be?

Mine? The ability to stop, slow or speed up time, according to my whims!

  10. I really like teleportation too - how awesome to decide to just go somewhere warm for a weekend in January. Poof!

Time manipulation appeals to me too.

If I have to be original, I think I'd like to speak to animals. Just think of the story ideas they could give you!

  11. I know what I want for my superpower: the ability to speak and understand any language.

  12. Kelly,

The Universal Translator! What an idea. Wish I'd thought of it.

    Take care.

  13. Longevity. I played with the idea of immortality, but that's an awfully long time. A few hundred years or so, that's probably doable with your sanity intact. Telekinesis would be my second choice. Teleportation sounds great – but only if you can take people along for the ride (people AND luggage).

  14. NL,

I agree about the luggage requirement. Love your idea about long life. Immortality does seem to have a down side.

    Telekinesis sound great too. :)
